The Berlin Music Festival was staged for the first time at Tempelhof Airport last weekend. The famous airport was thronged with music fans eager to hear such musicians as Jarvis Cocker, Pete Doherty and Peaches.
Most of the acts at the festival fall into the indie genre or the electronic genre. Highlights included Digitalism from Hamburg and Zoot Woman.
Jarvis Cocker played a well received set on Saturday night. There was some worry amongst fans that the notoriously unreliable Pete Doherty might not show up however he delighted fans with a raw acoustic set. Reports suggest he was looking quite healthy and had put on weight.
One of Berlin’s most popular acts Bonaparte lived up to their reputation with a superb live performance.
Due to noise restrictions there were a few problems in using the old airport as a music venue. The main stage had to be set up in one of Tempelhof’s large hangars which meant some sound problems for acts such as Zoot Woman.
There were also unused green areas around the airport which could have been ideal for camping. Nonetheless the festival was considered a success in its first year at a new venue with lessons to be learned and experiences to take forward for the coming years.
