The German Government announced a plan this week which they hope will see one million electric cars in use in Germany by the year 2020. Estimated costs for the program run at five hundred million euro. Opposition leaders have criticized the plan as much of it will fall to incoming governments while they also believe it needs to be more specific.

The economy minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg wants Germany to be at the forefront of the electric mobility revolution. While acknowledging the difficulties of the plan he believes it can be completed.

Currently there are over forty one million cars on German roads. A tiny fraction (1,400) of these are electrically powered cars. Much of the budget set aside for this ambitious plan will go into battery research with one hundred and seventy million earmarked.

One company who plane to introduce electric cars for sale in the coming years is Volkswagen. Working in partnership with Tesla Motors they hope to have the car ready by 2013.
