Last Sunday saw the Athletics World Championship draw to a close with Berlin receiving much praise for its hosting of the event.
The event did not have the best of starts with many people questioning the cost of tickets as well as the large number of empty seats however total numbers for the week reached four hundred thousand with an estimated one million people lining the streets to watch the marathon. This event proved an excellent tourist advertisement for Berlin with the race been shown in over one hundred and ninety countries worldwide.
Burkhard Kieker (chief of tourism) spoke of sights such as the State Opera House and the Brandeburg Gate being on show to the world. The mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit, presented record breaking sprint champion Usain Bolt with a large piece of the Berlin Wall.
Berlin has seen an increase in visitors for the first half of 2009 of 2.6%. This certainly bucks the worldwide trend where numbers have been down. Local Berliners came in for much praise for their welcoming and helpful attitude.
Next up Berlin hopes for a shot at hosting the Olympic Games.
